이 사업에서 아구스타웨스트랜드의 AW159 헬기가 선정되면서 롤스로이스는 슈퍼링스에 이어 다시 한번 해군에 엔진을 납품하게 됐다. 실제로 CTS800 엔진의 뿌리는 T800. 스텔스 무장정찰헬기인 RAH-66 코만치용으로 사용하기 위해 개발된 엔진이다. 여기에 최신 기술을 더한 엔진이 바로 CTS800 엔진이다. 그런 만큼 기존 슈퍼링스에 사용되는 젬(Gem) 엔진과는 비교도 안 된다는 게 애플릿 부사장의 설명이다. 그는 “두 엔진의 성능차이는 거의 세대간 차이”라며 “엔진의 성능을 보여주는 신뢰성과 정비성, 수명주기비용만 비교해도 CTS800 엔진이 월등히 우수하다”고 강조했다.
전 지사장은 또 해군이 요구한 조건 가운데 수명주기비용을 절감하는 데도 CTS800 엔진이크게 기여할 것으로 강조했다.
후속군수지원도 보다 원활해질 전망이다. 현재 애플릿 부사장이 한국에 상주하고 있는 이유 중 하나가 바로 원활한 후속군수지원을 위한 것. 그는 “고객 가까이에서 현재 문제가 뭔지 직접 듣고 해결책을 찾는 게 주요 임무”라고 말했다 실제로 애플릿 부사장은 젬 엔진에 대한 군수지원을 보완하기 위해 영국에 젬 엔진지원팀을 구성했다. 현재는 더 나은 서비스를 위해 해군과 긴밀히 의견을 나누고 있다”고 설명했다.
F-X 사업서 유로파이터 지원
현재 롤스로이스가 참여 중인 사업 가운데 가장 임박한 것이 바로 F-X 사업이다. 유로파이터의 EJ200 엔진을 개발한 제작사 중 한 곳인 만큼 유로파이터 지원에 집중하고 있다. 이처럼 EJ200 엔진의 신뢰도가 높은 데는 기술적인 부분들이 한 몫하고 있다. 그 가운데 하나가 덱뮤(DECMU, Digital Engine Control and Monitoring Unit)라는 장비다. 특히 덱뮤에는 각 엔진의 운용데이터가 모두 저장될뿐만 아니라 저장된 데이터는 운용자들에게도 모두 공유된다. 전완기 지사장은 “EJ200 엔진 운용자들은 지금까지 축적된 데이터를 보면서 엔진을 유지관리 할 수 있다”면서 “한국이 유로파이터를 도입하면 이러한 축적된 데이터를 모두 공유할 수 있다”고 설명했다. 그는 또 “정비도 정해진 시간에 꼬박꼬박하는 개념이 아니라, 감시장비의 분석에 따라 필요할 때만하는 개념”이라고 덧붙였다.
향후 군용기 사업에 주목
현재 롤스로이스가 F-X 사업에 집중하고 있지만, KFX 사업 등 향후 한국 내 사업확장에도 주목하고 있다. 전완기 지사장은 “KFX 사업이 체계개발 단계로 들어갈 때, 어떤 기종이 되던 롤스로이스는 필요한 성능을 갖춘 엔진을 갖추고 있다는 데 자부심을 가지고있다”면서“소형무장헬기(LAH) 사업도 윤곽이 드러나겠지만, 어떤 형태로 추진되더라도 단독엔진이나 합작엔진 형태로 참여할 계획이고, 큰 기대를 하고 있다”고 밝혔다.
특히 롤스로이스는 통합전력시스템(Integrated Power System, IPS)이 KFX에 큰 도움이 될 것으로 전망했다. IPS는 엔진을 통해 생산한 전기를 통합적으로 제어하고 관리하는 시스템. 오늘날 항공기들이 많은 장비를 탑재하면서 전기사용도 많아져 효율적인 전기사용이 필요해진 상황이다.
아울러 “한국이 KFX라든지 다른 차세대 제품에 IPS를 적용한다면, 엔진에 대한 기술이전뿐만 아니라 포괄적인 개념의 기술이전도 가능할 것으로 본다”고 그는 밝혔다.
국내 상용기 엔진사업도 활력
내년은 상용기 엔진 분야에서 의미가 큰 해다. 이는 아시아나항공이 트렌트900 엔진을 장착한 A380을 처음으로 국내에 도입하기 때문이다. 특히 트렌트 엔진이 국내에 들어오는 것은 이번이 처음. 특히 롤스로이스는 트렌트 엔진 도입과 함께 ‘토탈케어’라는 지원서비스도 도입한다. 토탈케어는 롤스로이스가 고객의 엔진을 책임지고 전체적인 지원을 하는 프로그램. 전완기 지사장은 “항공사가 자체적인 정비능력을 갖추는 것도 중요하지만, 무엇보다 항공기 운용을 극대화하는 게 중요하다”면서 “토탈케어는 이러한 목적에 맞춰 고객의 비용을 절감하고, 엔진운용률을 최상으로 유지하기 위한 것”이라고 설명했다.
물론 롤스로이스는 A380, A350을 시작으로 국내 상용기 엔진사업 확대에도 박차를 가한다는 계획이다. 전 지사장은 “롤스로이스는 앞으로 국내 항공사들이 신규로 어떤 항공기를 도입하더라도 대상 엔진을 보유하고 있다”며 “현재 차세대 신형 여객기 관련 논의도 준비 중이며,고객들에게 더 많은 제품을 소개할 수 있는 기회가 있을 것으로 본다”고 전망했다. |

With the selection of Agusta Westland’s AW159 helicopter by the navy, Rolls-Royce will once again supply engines to the navy after being the supplier of the engine in the Super Lynx. CTS800’s engine has its roots in the T800, which was developed to be used in the armed reconnaissance stealth helicopter RAH-66 Comanche. This engine was improved by state-of-the-art technology to create the CTS800 engine. Vice President Richard Eplett explains that the engine is beyond comparison with the Gem engine that was used in the previous Super Lynx. He said that “the performance difference between the two engines is almost a generation” and that “CTS800 engine is by far superior even when comparing only the reliability, maintainability, and life-cycle cost, which reflect engine’s performance”.
Regional Director Wanki Jun also emphasized that the CTS800 engine will significantly contribute to reducing life-cycle cost, which was one of requirements by the navy.
Subsequent logistical support will also be easier. This is one of the reasons Mr. Eplett is staying in Korea. His “main mission is to be near the customer to see what the problem is and to find the solution.” In the past, Mr. Eplett has formed a Gem engine support team in the United Kingdom to complement logistical support for the engine. He commented that his company is “closely communicating with the navy for better service.”
Supporting the Eurofighter in the F-X project
F-X project is the most imminent project that Rolls-Royce is participating in. As it is one of the developers of the EJ200 engine in the Eurofighter, Rolls-Royce is focusing on supporting the aircraft. One of the reasons for the high reliability of the EJ200 is the advanced technologies employed in the engine. Digital Engine Control and Monitoring Unit (DECMU) is among those. Operational data of each engine is stored on DECMU, and the data is shared with all the operators. Regional Director Wanki Jun said “operators of the EJ200 engine can maintain it by referring to the accumulated data” and that “Korea will have access to all the accumulated data if it decides to adopt the Eurofighter.” He also added that “maintenance is not scheduled periodically but only performed when deemed necessary by the monitoring device.”
Focusing on future military aircraft projects
Although Rolls-Royce is currently concentrating its efforts on the F-X project, it is looking into expanding its business in Korea. Regional Director Wanki Jun commented that “Rolls-Royce takes pride in being able to supply an engine with the necessary functions for any aircraft when the KFX project enters the development phase.” He said his company has “plans to participate in the Light Attack Helicopter (LAH) project, whether it be in the form of supplying its own engine or collaborating with another company to develop an engine.”
Rolls-Royce expects that the Integrated Power System (IPS) will be of great help to the KFX. IPS is a system that controls and manages the electrical power generated by the engine. In today’s aircrafts with many devices onboard, power consumption has become significant such that efficient use of electricity has become mandatory. Mr. Jun believes that “if Korea applies the IPS to KFX or other products, technology transfer of engine as well as a more comprehensive technology transfer would be possible.”
Domestic commercial airplane engine project is also gaining momentum
Next year is significant in the field of commercial airplane engine. Next year, Asiana Airlines will introduce A380 equipped with the Trent 900 engine. It will be the first time the Trent engine enters Korea. Along with introduction of the Trent engine, Rolls-Royce will introduce a support service referred to as the ‘Total Care’. It is a program in which Rolls-Royce provides a comprehensive support of the customer’s engine. Regional Director Wanki Jun commented that “while it is important for the airline to be equipped with its own maintenance capabilities, it is most important for it to maximize the aircraft operation.” He views the Total Care as the solution toward this goal “to reduce customer’s costs and to maintain engine utilization rate at a maximal level.”
Starting with A380 and A350, Rolls-Royce plans to further expand its business in domestic airplane engines. Mr. Jun said his company “has the engine for any aircraft that domestic airlines may introduce in the future.” He further added that his company “is preparing for discussions of next-generation passenger aircrafts and foresees an opportunity to introduce even more products to its customers in the future.” |
