단순포진바이러스 (HSV)
단순포진바이러스 (HSV)는 제 1형과 제 2형으로 구분되고, 감염되면 잠복감염, 수년간 재발, 평생감염으로 갈 수 있으며 외음부 암과 구강암 (oral cancer)으로 될 수 있습니다. 제 1형은 구강, 얼굴 등에 주로 병변을 일으키고, 제 2형은 성기 및 항문 등에 병변을 일으키는 바이러스로 널리 알려져 있습니다.

성인의 90% 이상이 체내에 잠복기 상태 (dormant state)로 있으며, 여성의 질 내에 발생한 경부암 환자의 80% 이상이 HSV 제 2형에 대한 항체를 지니고 있습니다. HSV 제 2형은 전염경로가 주로 성 접촉이므로 HSV 제 2형의 감염 여부의 검사는 경부암 예방의 차원에서 고려할 수 있습니다1).

HSV 감염 진단
HSV 감염을 진단하는 방법에는 바이러스 배양 검사와 면역학적 검사 등이 있습니다. 표준검사법으로 인정받고 있는 바이러스 배양 검사는 민감도가 매우 높으나 배양을 할 수 있는 시설이 있어야 하고, 배양 후 최종 결과를 관찰하기까지 시간이 많이 소요됩니다.
효소 면역법 (EIA) 및 면역형광법 (IFA)는 바이러스 배양 검사법에 비해 검사 소요시간을 상당히 단축하였으나 민감도 측면에 있어 배양법에 비해 떨어집니다.

이에 반해, PCR을 이용한 HSV DNA 검사법은 바이러스 배양법, 효소면역법보다 민감도가 뛰어나며 HSV 감염 여부 및 감염된 HSV 타입을 동시에 확인할 수 있습니다.

Herpes simplex Virus (HSV)
 
Herpes simplex viruses are divided into two types, HSV-1 and HSV-2. They lead to latent infection, recurring outbreaks, and permanent infection, and may cause pudendal and oral cancers. Type 1 usually produces lesions on the face and in the mouth, and type 2 on the genitalia and the anus.
 
Over 90% of adults carry the virus in a dormant state, and over 80% of patients with cervical cancer occurring inside the vagina possess antibody for HSV-2. The main route of transmission for HSV-2 is sexual contact, and testing for HSV-2 infection may be considered as a step in preventing cervical cancer.
 
HSV infection diagnosis
Diagnostic methods for HSV infection include viral culture tests and immunological tests. Viral culture test, which is considered the standard method, has a high sensitivity rate, but requires appropriate facility and takes a long time to produce results.
Enzyme immunoassay (EIA) and immunofluorescence assay produce results in a shorter time, but have lower sensitivity rates compared to viral culture tests.
On the other hand, HSV DNA test using PCR has a higher sensitivity rate than EIA, and it is able to detect infection and to identify the virus type simultaneously.
