Since my values for happiness changed, my fear of challenging the unfamiliar has gone and I gained confidence and endurance so that I could overcome my frustration and develop myself despite the failures. For this reason, I believe that I live a very happy life. Based on these thoughts, unlike my school days in which I sought that which I was familiar with and wanted to be an average person, when I attained adulthood, I was interested in new and unfamiliar things and wanted to challenge them and finally chose to go to Canada to enroll in language training. It was the first, biggest, courageous decision of my life. A huge arena called Canada gave me various culture shock who had been living as a man of narrow views for a long time, and above all, everything was strange and on top of that I had a fear of English. However, after overcoming the fear of English gradually and gathering my courage, I found I had an interest in English, which I had never known, so I decided to go to the United States to get language training in another environment. The language training gave me an opportunity to discover that I was a person interested in English which I didn’t know well. It was not only an opportunity of learning English, but also a valuable experience in my life and I found what I wanted to do the most and what I could do the best. Despite of my knowledge of English I have obtained since elementary school in Korea, I regarded a discipline called English as no more than a gateway to admission to college, so I didn’t take any interest in it but rather was repulsed by it. On the contrary, through a small challenge called language training, I found another hidden part of me, enlarged my experience, and had the desire to become familiar with and learn more English. Even after completing the language training, English acted as the key factor which helped me get up my nerve a second time in my life and created a stepping stone for me to achieve my dream of foreign aviator crew. After joining as a foreign aviator, I worked for seven months as a crew while receiving the orientation in English for a long, long time everyday for two months and living together with others who joined the company at the same time and with roommates from different countries, so that I was able to develop a good, natural command of English. Today, English is the key element of global society; it is a given, not an option. This is an era that you must have a good command of English to work in a better place, not just for those who speak English well to enjoy privileges. But it’s a reality that people from countries which the mother tongue is not English have difficulty becoming familiar with it. For this reason, an interest in English is most important to learn it with fun and patience, I think. In this sense, I am assured that I could be a promising, capable person of the Department of English Language and Literature. Although sometimes studying a language other than my mother tongue may lead to minor setbacks and frustration, it would give me a great sense of accomplishment and happiness answering my values for happiness that “to do what I want to do the most and what I can do the best”. |
