The sepsis, a type of Systemic Inflammatory Response Syndrome (SIRS), is known to be the 10th leading cause of death in United States. The sepsis and the septic shock are two of the most fatal syndromes to the patients in ICU. About 37~50% of geriatric patients die from the sepsis, and the number of cases reaches 700,000 annually. Since the early treatment of sepsis with vaccination against viruses, bacteria and fungi can reduce the case fatality rate approximately by half, the early diagnosis is especially crucial for this illness.

The diagnosis of sepsis is usually proven by the classical blood culture test, which takes no less than 72 hours to culture and about 6 days until composing the final report. During the test period, the patient should be prescribed based on the empirical diagnosis.

Most infections by sexually transmitted pathogens, such as C. trachomatis (most common), N. gonorrhoeae (the main cause of gonococcal infections) and those that cause bacterial vaginosis, chancroid and syphilitic chancre, are asymptomatic.
