Objective
The purpose of this study is to determine the moisturizing potential of different moisturizers, at 1, 4, 8, and 12 hours after product application.
Background
Hydration of the stratum corneum maybe assessed through skin conductance (Skicon-200) measurements using a skin surface hygrometer. The ability of an electric current to flow through the stratum corneum is directly proportional to its water content. An increase in skin conductance relative to the baseline value provides a measure of the moisturization level, provided other physical and physiological variables affecting skin electrical properties are carefully controlled.
TEWL (Trans-epidermal Water Loss)
Decrease in TEWL indicates that the product have formed semi-occlusive layers over the skin thus slowing water loss.
Protocol
Dry skin subjects will be selected to participate in this study. Subjects will be instructed not to put any lotion/oil/cream on their volar forearm 24 hour prior to the start of the study. Subjects will not be allowed to drink hot caffeinated drinks one hour before the measurements.
All measurements will be taken in a climate-controlled facility at a fixed temperature of 210 C and relative humidity of 40 %. Panelist will rest quietly for 20 minutes before any readings will be taken on the forearm.
Measurements will be taken at baseline, 1, 4, 8, and 12 hour after product application. After the baseline measurements, a product will be applied to volar forearm in a volume of 3.2 l per cm2 to each test site. The product will be spread evenly using a glass tube. Subjects will be instructed to come back to the lab after 4 and 8 hour. The subjects will be given a coded product in a syringe, glass tube, and an instruction to apply the product in the same sites at night and come back the following morning for the 12-hour post application measurements. The subjects will be instructed not to shower/bath or have a water contact to the test sites after product application.
