한국 현대 미술 작가들 번역(영어 번역본)The theme of Kwon Soo Hyun’s work is elephants living in groups based on family led by a matriarch, and communicating through group activity. Because elephants not only conduct various important tasks in an ecosystem to provide a place to live for many types of animals but also have good memory, men have domesticated and used elephants since thousands of years ago. Whether in the East or West, elephants possess positive meanings such as power, victory, longevity, wealth and prosperity. Art Nom studied Korean painting in college and worked at a character design company for a few years. Art Nom’s work began by finding the connection between Korean painting and character. The folk painting that Art Nom used as motive is a drawing that contains the hope of commoners during the Chosun dynasty. During that time, folk paintings were practical artworks that had a clear usage in people’s lives. They would attach them on the front gate on New Years, give them as gifts, or have weddings in front of folding screens that have folk paintings drawn on it. They depict the lives and philosophy of people during that time most accurately because they were intimately involved in the lives of the commoners. Also, artists who drew folk paintings did not leave any marks on their drawings. Because of that, they were able to not confine themselves in a specific form and use their imagination. Lee Dong Gi is a representative artist who positioned Korean pop art and spread its boundaries. His Atomouse is a clever combination of ‘Atom’, a cartoon character that represents Japan, and ‘Mickey Mouse’, America’s famous character. During the 1970s and 80s, when he spent his childhood, our culture was dominated by contents from the United States and Japan, represented by Atom and Mickey Mouse. Therefore, Atomouse can be viewed as a natural reflection of the artist’s childhood memories which lied dormant inside him. Also in the early 1990s, when the artist was studying fine arts in college and also released Atomouse for the first time, abstract art was mainstream in the Korean art world and it was a time when the divide between fine art and popular art was clear. Also, Atomouse is not simply a reuse of pop image, but originated from the artist’s determination to break down the border between fine art and popular art. By continuously changing Atomouse within the piece, whether it is in a flower pad, eating ramen noodles, in a psychiatric ward, nailed on a cross, smoking cigarettes, or trapped in a bubble, the artist is recording balance and tension of society and art in his own way. Lim Ji Bin wants to talk about hidden side of modern consumer culture through a sculpture piece that uses a bear-shaped toy called ‘Bearbrick’ as motive. Bearbrick is a word that combines ‘bear’ and ‘brick’, and is a toy that was developed by a toy manufacturer in Japan in 2001 as a collector’s item for adults. |
