1. 추구하는 인간상
우리나라의 교육은 홍익인간의 이념 아래 모든 국민으로 하여금 인격을 도야하고, 자주적 생활 능력과 민주 시민으로서 펼요한 자질을 갖추게 하여 인간다운 삶을 영위하게 하고, 민주 국가의 발전과 인류 공영의 이상을 실현하는 데 이바지하게 함을 목적으로 하고 있다. 이러한 교육 이념을 바탕으로, 이 교육과정이 추구하는 인간상은 다음과 같다.

2. 학교급별 교육목표
가. 초퉁학교 교육목표
초등학교의 교육은 학생의 학습과 일상생활에 펼요한 기초 능력 배양과 기본 생활 습관을 형성하는 데 중점을둔다.
(1) 풍부한 학습 경험을 통해 몸과 마음이 건강하고 균형 있게 자랄 수 있도록 하며, 다양한 일의 세계에 대한 기초적인 이해를 한다‘
(2) 학습과 생활에서 문제를 인식하고 해결하는 기초 능력을 기 르고, 이를 새롭게 경험할 수 있는 상상력을 키운다.
(3) 우리 문화에 대해 이해하고, 문화를 향유하는 올바른 태도를 기른다.
(4) 자신의 경험과 생각을 다양하게 표현하며 타인과 공감하고 협동하는 태도를 기른다.
나. 중학교 교육목표
중학교의 교육은 초등학교 교육의 성과를 바탕으로, 학생의 학습과 일상생활에 펼요한 기본 능력을 배양하며, 다원적인 가치를 수용하고 존중하는 민주시민의 자질 함양에 중점을 둔다.
(1) 심신의 건강하고 조화로운 발달을 추구하며, 다양한 분야의 경험과 지식을 익혀 적극적으로 진로를탐색한다.
(2) 학습과 생활에 펼요한 기초 능력과 문제 해결력을 바탕으로 창의적 사고력을 기른다.
(3) 자신을 둘러싼 세계에 대한 경혐을 토대로 다양한 문화와 가치에 대한 이해를 넓힌다.
(4) 다양한 소통능력을 기르고 민주시민으로서의 자질과 태도를 갖춘다.
3. 목표
사회과는 사회생활에 필요한 지식과 기능을 익혀 이를 토대로 사회 현상을 올바르게 인식하고, 민주 사회 구성원에게 요구되는 가치와 태도를 지님으로써 민주 시민으로서의 자질을 갖추도록 하는 교과이다. 사회과에서 육성하고자 하는 민주 시민은 사회생활을 영위하는 데 펼요한 지식을 바탕으로 인권 존중, 관용과 타협의 정신, 사회 정의의 실현, 공동체 의식 , 참여와 책임 의식 등의 민주적 가치와 태도를 함양하고, 나아가 개인적, 사회적 문제를 합리적으로 해결하는 능력을 길러 개인의 발전은 물론, 사회, 국가, 인류의 발전에 기여할 수 있는 자질을 갖춘 사람이다. 사회과는 지리, 역사 및 제 사회 과학의 개념과 원리, 사회 제도와 기능, 사회 문제와 가치, 그리고 연구 방법과 절차에 관한 요소를 통합적으로 선정, 조직하여 사회 현상을 종합적으로 이해하고 탐구한다. 또, 사회과에서는 우리의 삶의 터전인 지역의 이해를 바탕으로 우리 민족의 역사와 활동에 대한 종합적인 파악과 현실에 대한 역사적인 시각에서의 이헤 및 한국인으로서의 정체성과 세계 시민으로서의 가치, 태도 등에 관한 요소를 중시한다. 사회과는 다양한 정보를 활용하여 사회 현상에 관한 지식을 발견하고 문제를 해결하는 데 필요한 비판적 사고력, 창의력, 판단 및 의사 결정력 등의 신장을 강조한다. 이를 위해 다양한 탐구 방법을 활용하여 학습자 스스로 학습하는 기회를 제공하고, 흥미와 관심을 고려하여 개개인의 수준에 적합한 경험을 제공하는 효율적인 교수 • 학습 전략을 지향한다. 그리고 학교 특성 에 따라서 지역성과 시사성을 고려하여 지도한다. 사회과는 학습자의 성장 발달 정도와 사회 · 문화적 경험을 고려하여 학교급별로 주안점을 달리한다.
초등학교에서는 학생틀이 주변의 사회적 사실과 현상에 대하여 관심과 흥미를 가지며, 생활과 관련된 기본적 지식과 능력을 습득하고, 창의적인 자세로 일상생활을 할 수 있도록 한다. 이를 위하여 학생들은 사회적 사실과 현상을 이해하는 데 펼요한 기본적인 사실과 개념을 배우고, 이를 자신의 주변 환경이나 문제에 적용할 수 있는 사고력을 지녀야 한다. 또, 이 러한 지식과 사고를 사회적 행동으로 실천할 수 있는 적극적인 태도를 길러야 한다.

1. Desirable Human Character
Korean education, based on the philosophies of humanitarianism, aims to have all citizens to improve their characters and to acquire the ability to live independent lives and the necessary traits of a democratic citizen so that they can lead good lives and contribute to the progress of democracy and the ideal of the coexistence of mankind.
Based on these educational philosophies, the education curriculum desires the following characters:

2. Educational Goals for Each Level of Education
A. Educational Goals for Elementary School
Elementary education shall be focused on growing basic abilities for a student’s education and everyday life and forming basic life habits.
(1) Elementary education helps students develop balance between sound bodies and sound minds through diverse educational experiences, as well as to get basic understanding of different occupations.
(2) Elementary education seeks to help students grow basic skills in identifying and solving problems in school and in everyday life, and foster creativity that enable them to see them in a new light.
(3) Elementary education helps students understand Korean culture and grow appropriate attitudes for enjoying culture.
(4) Elementary education seeks to help students express their experiences and thoughts in diverse ways, as well as to sympathize and cooperate with others.
B. Middle School’s Educational Objective
Middle school education puts an emphasis on creating basic abilities that will help academics and daily lives, fostering the requirements of a democratic citizen that knows how to accept diversities and respect them with the basis of the results of elementary school education.
(1) Promote a healthy and well-rounded growth of the mind and the body, obtain experiences and knowledge from various fields and actively pioneer careers.
(2) Based on basic abilities that daily lives and academics require, students will grow their creative mindset.
(3) On the basis of the experiences gained from the students’ surroundings students will expand their knowledge on the value of culture.
(4) Foster communicative skills and get educated to be a democratic citizen.
3.Objectives
Social Studies is a subject that enables the students to obtain academic knowledge and common sense to precisely understand social phenomena, make students be qualified as a democratic citizen by getting them to have the attitudes and the values that democratic societies demand. Social Studies aims to nurture the type of citizen that respect human rights, have the spirit of understanding and cooperate, realize social justice, participating and taking responsibilities that is based on the knowledge to lead a social life. Moreover, social studies pursue to educate students in a way that would enable prosperity of the society, the nation, and the humanity by cultivating the ability to rationally solve problems that revolve around individuals and the society.
Social Studies synthetically understand and study geography, history as well as the basics of social studies, social systems and their functions, social problems and their values, and select elements about research methods and the procedures, then organize them to synthetically understand social phenomena. Also, Social Studies bases the understandings of our site of livings, our region to synthetically comprehend our ethnicity’s historical activities, understanding reality with historic views along with putting emphasis on the identities of Koreans, the values as a international citizen, attitudes.
Social Studies utilizes various information to find knowledge about social phenomena and emphasizes the growth of critical thinking, judgments, decision-making to solve social problems. For this to happen, social studies provides opportunities to autonomously study using various study methods, promotes effective teaching strategies that takes individual interests and levels of each student into consideration to provide adequate experience. Also, teach according to school characteristics, regionality, and the social character.
Social Studies takes the student’s growth rate, social-cultural experiences into consideration and puts emphasis differently according to school level.
In elementary school, social studies will lead the students to have interests in the social phenomena, obtain common sense that social life requires, live their lives in a creative way. For this to happen, students will learn fundamental concepts and basic facts to understand social phenomena, and have the thinking skill to apply these studies to their surroundings or problems. Also, the students need to foster attitudes that they can actively put these learning into social action.
In middle school, students will use scientific procedures to find, apply, solve social problems from the pin points of each section based on the learning from elementary school and exhibit civil spirit that actively participate in the community life.
With the ability to find and study the basic knowledge and ability regarding social phenomena, geography, history as well as the basics of social studies students will synthetically understand our society’s feature and the world’s diversity. Solve contemporary social problems with creativity and foster ability to take part in community. With this on base, students will grow qualifications as a democratic citizen who can contribute to the growth of the individual, society, the nation, and the mankind.
