연구논문 번역(영어 번역본)1.1 The context of the study At the opening ceremony of the Nobel Laureate Symposium in London on climate change in 2009, Steven Chu, a Nobel laureate in physics and the current US Secretary of Energy, claimed that painting roofs white and roads in pale color would have an effect equivalent to taking all the cars in the world off the road for 11 years. Changing the color of a roof to white or a light color would increase its surface reflectance value, or albedo. This would mean that a larger amount of solar radiant energy entering the Earth is reflected back, which would in turn lead to a reduction in urban heat island effect and serve as an appropriate response to global warming. In Korea, where buildings generate 24% of all greenhouse gases produced nationally, the reduction of this type of greenhouse gases is becoming an issue of concern, and various methods are being considered in order to address the problem. In the United States and in other countries, increasing the reflectance of the exterior finishing materials of buildings is being used as one solution in response to global warming. It was in this context that Chu’s claim was made and received attention. Changing the color of roofs would impact the solar radiation absorbance and reflectance of ground surface and building roof surface, which would in turn affect the microclimate and ultimately the outside air temperature of that urban area. The need for scientific data required to formulate effective responses to climate change, which is becoming a serious global concern, motivated this study and serve as its context. 1.2 Purpose and method of the study The purpose of this study is to provide estimates for the energy saved from heating and air-conditioning at the level of individual buildings by altering the solar radiant energy absorption and reflectance rates. This will allow the analysis of the extent of the energy-saving effect of white roofs in Korean climate, which is a mid-latitude temperate climate. Toward this objective, the study will set a number of models with variables such as the building’s area, number of floors, and purpose. Then, the impact of white roof will be evaluated by using TRNSYS, a CFD energy analysis tool, to simulate the changes in energy consumption according to the variations in roof surface reflectance rate. |
