As microbial resistance to antibiotics poses an ever-increasing cause for concern, the challenge of detecting resistance and providing clinicians with accurate information has grown. VITEK®2, which functions as a laboratory’s primary test system, is capable of detecting resistance and providing same-day identification and susceptibility testing for the vast majority of organisms encountered in routine clinical laboratories. To provide additional information needed for treatment decisions, or to complete testing not performed by VITEK®2, Etest®, an agar gradient method, synergistically complements VITEK®2 by providing susceptibility testing of slow-growing or fastidious organisms that are difficult to test. Etest® provides an extended range of minimum inhibitory concentrations to provide further information to clinicians when needed.
AST menu expansion provides new VITEK®2 applications
With the release of VITEK®2 systems software update 5.01, bioMérieux has added new susceptibility testing capabilities to the AST menu. In the past, susceptibility testing of pathogens like yeast and viridans streptococci was not considered a priority. But today, it has become more important to provide clinicians with information regarding resistance in these organisms as well since these organisms pose a real health risk in some patient populations. In fact, yeast susceptibility testing has always been very labor intensive and costly so few requests were made of laboratories to perform this testing. Now, with VITEK® 2 automated testing of these organism groups, laboratories can provide a rapid result to clinicians. In response to this increasing demand for antifungal and Streptococcus susceptibility testing, bioMérieux has added AST testing capability to the fully automated VITEK®2 system. New antifungals have been added (check with your local bioMérieux representative for more information on availability), and Streptococcus viridans and Group A Streptococcus susceptibility testing will soon be available.
New remote access features with VILINK® and VITEK® 2 systems Software update 5.01
VILINK® provides a new range of services for the monitoring and optimization of diagnostic devices, and enables the download of software updates over the Internet. VILINK has been designed to be modular and firewall friendly so that it is compatible with security rules put in place by the laboratory or hospital. Based on a standard product developed by Axeda, a leader in the field of secured Internet based access to diagnostic systems, it is designed to ensure secure access. For the microbiologist, VILINK ensures greater productivity as some routine preventive maintenance and troubleshooting can be accomplished over the Internet (thus optimizing “up time”). And, because VILINK enables the laboratory to quickly download software updates, new susceptibility test knowledge bases can be downloaded to the VITEK 2 system as soon as they come available.
The VITEK® systems 2 5.01 software update coupled with ViLINK also enables remote multi-user access to the VITEK® software application. VITEK® results can now be brought to the microbiologist’s workbench and VITEK 2 results can be available at the terminals on the laboratory’s mainframe computer. Multi-user access makes it possible for several users to access the VITEK 2 system applications at the same time from their workbench. If remote access to the hospital network is permitted, users can consult the VITEK 2 from any remote location, even from home.
LyfoCults® Plus – a unique way to deliver ATCC® quality control strains
In light of growing regulatory requirements and to help laboratories meet quality control demands in ID and susceptibility testing, bioMérieux has introduced a new patented all-in-one quality control solution that provides ATCC® (American Type Culture Collection) licensed derivative quality control strains. Packaged in a self-contained disposable vial, this new glass-free system ensures greater safety and boosts efficiency by eliminating the need for additional tools for culturing QC organisms. Immediate hydration without pre-incubation saves time, and the built-in inoculation wand provides a streaking method that facilitates QC plate preparation. Simply crush the vial containing the diluent thereby rehydrating the lyophilized organism and transfer it to an agar plate with the supplied applicator. A variety of ATCC® microorganisms are available in pre-packaged sets providing the correct QC strains for use with commercial systems like VITEK® 2 (each strain is provided in two vials). While LyfoCults® products have been in use in North America, a new line of Lyfocults® Plus QC sets was recently launched globally. |
