제가 산타 모니카 대학에 지원하게 된 가장 큰 동기는 수잔 디렌데(Susan diRende) 교수님이 쓰신 미국 교수가 직접 전해주는 미국 유학 성공법이란 책을 보고 지원을 결정하게 되었습니다. 사회생활 3년을 하면서 영어의 필요성을 느끼게 되었습니다. 한국의 경우에는 중학교, 고등학교, 대학교까지 10년을 영어를 배웁니다. 하지만 10년을 공부했지만 그 실력이 나오기는 쉽지 않습니다. 하지만 취업을 하기 위해서는 토익이나 토플점수가 꼭 필요한 게 한국 사회입니다. 특별한 영어 점수 없이 취업은 하게 되었지만, 제가 일하는 분야인 소프트웨어 프로그래머의 경우에도 모든 언어는 영어로 사용이 됩니다. 거기에 더불어 제가 일하는 CCTV 관제 소프트웨어도 해외에 판매가 되면서 영어의 사용은 더 가중되었고 해외에서 열리는 관련 전시회에 나갈 기회를 얻기도 쉽지가 않았습니다. 그러한 계기로 이번에 회사에 사표를 제출하면서 본격적으로 영어를 배워보자는 생각을 하게 되었고, 더불어 나의 전공분야의 공부 또한 더욱 더하고 싶다는 결심을 하게 되었습니다. 4년제 대학교까지 나왔지만 아직은 공부가 부족하다는 생각을 많이 하게 됩니다. 산타모니카 대학에서 어학코스를 이수하게 되면 university of southern california의 컴퓨터 공학대학원을 지원하여 이수할 예정입니다. 물론 제 나이가 다시 공부를 시작하기에 빠르지도 늦지도 않은 나이이지만 ‘배움에는 나이가 없다’라는 말이 있듯이 공부를 시작함에 있어 나이는 중요하지 않다고 생각을 하고 최우선적으로 ‘영어를 배우려면 영어의 본고장인 미국으로 가서 열심히 공부를 해보자’는 생각에 이렇게 대학에 지원을 하게 되었습니다. 남들은 이런 결정을 한 저를 걱정을 많이 합니다. 직장을 잘 다니다가 영어 공부를 하겠다고 회사를 그만두고 미국유학을 결정하기까지는 저도 수많은 생각을 하고 결정을 하였습니다. 제가 내린 결정에 저는 만족하고 있으며 더 늦기 전에 다시 공부를 하려고 합니다.
대학을 졸업하면 무엇을 해야 되나 고민도 많았습니다. 다시 직장을 구하는 것도 쉽지 않다는 것, 유학기간 동안에 들어갈 금전적인 문제, 하지만 좀 더 저의 능력을 올리는 미국 유학기간을 헛되이 보내지 않는다면 그러한 문제도 자연스럽게 해결될 수 있다고 생각을 하였습니다.
어렸을 때부터 저의 꿈은 리누스 토발즈 같은 소프트웨어 프로그래머였습니다. 3년간의 짧은 프로그래머 생활을 하게 되면서 느낀 점은 아직은 더 배워야겠다는 것이었고, 이렇게 저는 더욱더 배우기 위하여 지원을 하게 되었습니다.

The biggest motivation for me to apply to Santa Monica University came from “Studying in America Successfully, A Piece of Advice from an American Professor,” written by Professor Susan diRende. I have wanted to improve my English skills from the three years of work experience. Throughout ten years from elementary school to high school, I have studied English like all other Korean students, with disappointingly little to show for the effort. Dauntingly, nearly all workplaces in Korea expected potential workers to have high standardized English test scores. Even though I got an opportunity to start working without much English qualification, I soon found that English proficiency is an absolute necessity in working as a software programmer. The need intensified as the closed circuit television controller program that I have developed started being marketed abroad, with concurrent increase in requirements to participate in various exhibitions that I could not fulfill.
I have thus made the decision to quit working and start making serious efforts to learn English, as well as to study programming in further depth. I have felt that the undergraduate studies were not fully adequate to prepare me for work. While taking a language course at Santa Monica, I also hope to take courses in the graduate school of computer science in University of Southern California. I do not think that I am either too old or too young to restart studying. Rather, I believe in the saying, “There is no age limit for learning,” and I have decided to apply to a program in America as I believe the best way to learn English is to do it where people speak the language daily. Some worry that I may regret my decisions. But I have given careful thoughts before I quit my job and decided to study abroad. I am confident that it is the right decision, and now is the right time to execute it.
I have also pondered what to do after finishing the program. I am fully aware that getting a new job will be difficult, and that monetary requirements for the program are significant. However, I think that those problems will solve themselves as long as I make the most of the opportunity to study abroad.
My childhood dream was to become a programmer like Linus Torvalds. From the three short years as a programmer, I have felt the need to learn more, and this is why I am applying to this program.
