저는 새로운 이론을 만들고 정치이론을 현실세계에 적용하거나 현실세계에서 일어나는 일을 정치학적으로 분석하는데 관심이 있어서 계량정치학 분야에 대한 공부를 하였습니다. 이는 이후에 제가 세계 각국의 정치를 분석하여 한데 모으는데 큰 도움이 되리라고 생각됩니다. 현실과 정치학은 긴밀히 연관되어 있습니다. 사람들이 사회를 만들어 살아가면서 가장 중요하고 빈번하게 하는 활동이 바로 정치활동입니다. 이런 정치적인 모습을 분석하고 광범위한 연구를 하는데 있어서 계량(통계)적인 방법이 중요하다고 생각되어 대학교 2학년 때 정치학 방법론(Research Methodology in Political Science) 강의와 계량정치(Quantitative Political Analysis) 과목을 수강하였습니다. 여기서 배운 이론과 통계학적 기업을 통한 실질적인 활동으로 2009년에 저희 학교에서 있었던 총학생회장선거에 대해 연구를 하여 그 선거에서 나타난 투표요인과 후보자 선택요인을 로지스틱 회귀분석(logistic regression)이란 방법을 이용하여 분석한 글을 작성하였습니다. 이 활동을 위해서 학교에서 비슷한 관심사를 가진 학생들과 계량정치학회(Quantitative Political Analysis Association)를 만들어서 활동하였습니다. 이러한 활동은 현실사회에서 나타난 정치행위를 데이터로 만들어 다른 연구에도 도움을 줄 수 있게 하였습니다. 또한, 2011년 총학생회장선거에서 같은 과 선배가 총학생회장 선거에 나가 당선되는데 실질적인 도움을 주기도 하였습니다. 이런 경험은 정치학을 연구하는 활동이 이론적이나 분석에만 그치지 않고 다시 현실에 적용되어 작용할 수 있다는 것을 알게 해주었습니다. 때문에 이 분석에 사용된 통계기법등과 같은 방법론을 공부하는 것 역시 현실사회에 적용하는 정치체제 모델을 찾으려는 저에게는 매우 중요한 부분이라고 생각합니다. 때문에 비교정치연구와 방법론 공부를 위해서 방법론에 있어서 가장 발달되어 있고 풍부한 자료와 다양한 경험이 녹아있는 미국과 귀교에서 공부를 하고 싶습니다
각 지역별 정치변동과 정치상황은 넓게 보면 공통점이 존재하고 지역별로 발전 정도가 다르기 때문에 선진국의 상황은 무조건적이지는 않지만, 정치후진국에 도움이 될 것이라는 생각을 합니다. 그래서 저는 제러미 리프킨(Jeremy Rifkin)의 <유러피언 드림>(European Dream)을 바탕으로 아메리칸 드림과 EU로 대변되는 유러피언 드림을 비교하여 유럽의 현재 상황을 분석하였고, 그들이 꿈꾸던 이상적인 상황이 현재의 EU에서 달성하기 어렵다는 사실을 확인하였습니다. 더 나아가 그들이 이상적으로 생각하는 정치적 상황이 동아시아에서 발생할 수 있다는 논지의 글을 졸업논문으로 작성하였습니다. 이렇게 지역별 상황을 비교하는 것은 제가 생각하는 꿈을 이루는데 필요한 기반이 되었습니다. 이 기반을 더욱 공고히 다지기 위해서 여러 나라의 정치 상황을 공부하는 비교정치학이 가장 발달되어 있는 미국에서 공부하고 싶으며 특히 우수한 명성과 환경 및 훌륭한 시스템을 가지고 정치학의 선도학교인 귀교에서 저의 꿈을 실현하는 시작을 하려고 합니다. |
영어 에세이 번역(영어 번역본)People I met during my stay at Kenya were filled with distrust of their political system and political leaders. They believed that as long as the current government remained in power, their country would be devoid of development and future. This belief was to such an extent that their distrust of politics almost seemed like a political apathy. Nevertheless, the Kenyan citizens direly wished for improvements of their domestic politics and envy other countries with more stable political system. Also, they were impressed with Korea’s rise from similar status as Kenya in early to mid-20th century to a nation that is sufficiently developed to compete with superpower nations. They expressed hopes to benchmark the steps Korea has taken. Moreover, they were curious about the driving force behind Korea’s development. The question I had during a lecture on Political Change, “Is it possible for political changes in one region to occur in another region?”, was once again aroused by my experience in Kenya. Also, I became instilled with the thought that a method that was successful in one region can be successfully reapplied to another region. This belief may be justified by the following rationale: if citizens of different countries have the same desire to solve similar social problems, political phenomena on a large scale are predicted to be the same regardless of differences in the detailed methodology.
I pursued a study in politicometrics because I was interested in creating new political theories, applying political theories to real-world problems, and analyzing world phenomena using political scientific tools. I believe this background will help me greatly in the future as I collect political data from various countries around the world and analyze them. Our world today is intimately related to political science. One of most important and frequently conducted behavior in human society is a political one. I realized the importance of quantitative and statistical methods to analyze such political phenomenon and conduct a wide range of research, and took a class in Research Methodology in Political Science and another course in Quantitative Political Analysis during my sophomore year. Based on political theories and statistical foundation acquired from these classes, I researched the election of student government president at my school that was conducted in 2009 and used logistic regression to analyze voting and candidate selection factors. Toward this goal, I organized the Quantitative Political Analysis Association with students with similar interests. These activities helped me convert political behavior in the society into data and facilitated other research as well. They also provided a practical help to a senior student in the department, and assisted him/her to become elected as the president of the student government in 2011. The experience taught me that research of political science is not only limited to theory or analysis but can also be reapplied to real-world applications. Therefore, I believe that study of methodology such as statistical methods used in the above analysis is also very important for me in my search of political system model that can be applied to our society. These are my motivations for wanting to research comparative politics and study its methodology in the United States and especially at your school, which is very advanced in the field and possess many data and diverse experience.
Because political changes and situations in different regions have similarities on a larger scale, and because the extents of development vary among different regions, I believe that situation of advanced countries may be useful to politically underdeveloped countries. From this hypothesis, I built on Jeremy Rifkin’s “European Dream” to compare American Dream with European Dream represented by the European Union and analyzed current situation in Europe for my graduation thesis. I concluded that ideals of the Europeans are difficult to achieve in today’s European Union, and that their ideal political system can occur in East Asia. Such experience of comparing regional situations has become a foundation required for achieving my dreams. In order to further develop my abilities as a scholar, I am attracted to the United States for its advanced programs in comparative politics. I would like to take the first step to achieving my dreams at your school, which is a leader in political science and has excellent reputation, vibrant environment for research, and well-established system. |
