백두대간 관광열차 이용객 10만명 돌파 기념행사가 지난 20일 경북 봉화 분천역에서 열렸다. 경북도는 이날 10만명 대표 고객에게 꽃다발과 기념품을 증정하고, 기념 퍼포먼스, 기관사, 승무원 격려 등 다양한 축하 이벤트 행사를 가졌다. 경북도와 산림청, 강원도, 충청북도, 코레일 등 정부·지자체·공기업이 함께 손을 잡고 만든 백두대간 관광열차는 접근성이 열악한 백두대간 지역의 관광활성화를 추진하고 도시와 농촌을 연결, 지역특산물 판로개척으로 농촌경제 활성화를 위해 추진해 왔다. 지난 4월 12일 상업운행을 시작으로 매일 평균 1천명의 고객이 열차를 이용, 지금까지 10만명이 이용했으며, 올해 연말까지 25만명에 달할 것으로 전망하고 있다. 백두대간순환열차 ‘O트레인’은 백두대간의 아름다운 사계절을 모티브로 제작됐으며, 전망석과 커플룸, 패밀리룸, 유아 놀이 공간, 카페 등 총 4량으로 구성돼 있다. 서울역과 수원역에서 출발하여, 제천, 태백, 영주 등 중앙선, 태백선, 영동선으로 이어진 중부내륙 순환구간을 1일 4회 운행한다. 특히, 우리나라에서 최초로 가족석과 연인석 등 곳곳에 전망 경관 모니터를 설치, 열차 철로 위를 달리는 모습을 실시간으로 볼 수 있도록 했다. 백두대간 협곡열차 ‘V트레인’은 ‘아기 백호’를 모티브로 만들어져 경북 북부 봉화지역의 분천, 양원, 승부역과 강원도 철암역 등 중부 내륙의 절경을 담은 구간을 하루 3회 왕복한다. 지붕에는 태양열 발전판을 설치해 탄소 배출을 줄였고, 접이식 승강문, 조개탄 난로, 선풍기 등 복고적인 분위기를 그대로 느낄 수 있도록 제작됐으며, 천정을 제외한 공간을 유리로 처리해 승객의 관람 시야를 최대한 넓혔다. 분천 – 철암간 27.7km를 운행하는 이 열차는 비록 거리는 짧지만 운행시간은 무려 1시간 10분으로 시속 30km의 저속으로 달리는 초저속 열차이다. 빠름이 각광받는 사회에서 협곡열차는 느림을 통해 여유와 풍경을 얻을 수 있어 상대적으로 더 돋보이며, 기차를 타는 것만으로도 관광이 될 수 있도록 만들어졌다. 김관용 경상북도지사는 “백두대간의 우수한 철도인프라와 풍부한 관광자원을 연계해 지역의 자생적 발전 역량 확보로 지역경제 활성화 유도의 기반을 마련하는 기회가 될 것”이라고 말했다. 김관용 경북도지사가 백두대간 협곡열차 ‘V트레인’에 탑승해 창 밖의 풍경을 보고 있다.(사진/김락현기자)

The event to commemorate the 100,000th passenger on board the Baekdu-daegan sightseeing train was held at Buncheon Station in Bonghwa, Gyeongsangbuk-do.
Gyeongsangbuk-do presented a flower bouquet and souvenir to the 100,000th customer this day, and held various celebration events such as a commemoration performance and encouraging engineers and crew members.
The Baekdu-daegan sightseeing train, which was collaboratively made by the government·local goverments·public enterprises such as Gyeongsangbuk-do, Korea Forest Service, Gangwon-do, Chungcheongbuk-do, KORAIL, has promoted the tourism activation of the Baekdu-daegan area, which has poor approachability, connected the cities and rural community, and vitalized countryside economy by pioneering sales routes for local products.
Initiating its commercial operations this past April 12th, an average of 1000 customers have used the train daily, reaching 100,000 to this day, and is expected to reach 250,000 by the end of this year.,
The Baekdu-daegan cyclic train ‘O-train’ was made with the beautiful four seasons of the Baekdu-daegan as its motive, and is consisted of a total of 4 cars that include viewing seats, couple rooms, family rooms, kids play space, and cafes.
Departing from Seoul Station and Suwon Station, the train runs through the Central Inland Cyclic Section, which goes through Jecheon, Taebaek, Youngju and connects to the Joongang Line, Taebaek Line, and Yeongdong Line, 4 times a day.
Especially, the train is the first in Korea to have scenic viewing monitors installed in various places such as family or lover seats, enabling passengers to see what it’s like running on top of the railroad in real-time.
The Baekdu-daegan valley train ‘V-train’ was made with the ‘baby white tiger’ and runs round trips around the area that has the magnificent views of the central inland, including Buncheon, Yangwon, Seungbu station in Gyeongsangbuk-do’s northern Bonghwa region and Cheoram station in Gangwon-do.
Solar energy generator panels are installed on the roof to reduce carbon emission, while folding doors, oval briquette boilers, fans were manufactured to present an old-fashioned atmosphere, and all space except for the ceiling are processed with glass to widen the passengers’ viewing range as much as possible.
This train, which operates in the 27.7km section between Buncheon – Cheoram, is a super slow train which speed is 30km per hour and runs for 1 hour and 10 minutes despite the short distance.
In a society where quickness is valued, the valley train stands out relatively because it lets one enjoy composure and the scenery through slowness, and made train riding itself a form of tourism.
Kim Kwan-yong, governor of Gyeongsangbuk-do, said that “By connecting Baekdu-daegan’s excellent railroad infrastructure and abundant tourism resource, the region will obtain capability for self sustainable development, which will be an opportunity to establish a foundation for vitalizing the local economy.”
